Is Brexit good or bad for animal welfare?
Animal health and welfare in the UK has been inextricably linked with our membership of the European Union. Indeed, around 80% of UK animal welfare legislation originated from the EU. Although the Government has committed to maintaining high welfare standards, a House of Lords report in 2017 warned that the greatest threat to farm animal welfare standards post-Brexit would come from UK farmers competing against cheap, imported food from countries that produce to lower standards than the UK. As politicians prepare to hammer out the detail of key pieces of legislation on post-Brexit trade and agriculture, this session will hear two sides of the debate on whether Brexit will be good or bad for animals.
