More than one option: Management decisions for the pet ferret

11 Nov 2021
RVC Clinical Theatre 2

Ferrets are popular pets and regularly seen in small animal practice. In general, the approach to a sick ferret is similar to that of other small carnivores with a few key species-specific differences. Preventative medicine however can be more challenging, with conflicting evidence and controversy regarding the most appropriate vaccination protocol, contraceptive method or even diet to recommend. Advice may vary significantly according to the individual and their lifestyle. This session will include the risks and benefits of vaccinating a pet ferret to help guide recommendations for the individual. The different options for hormone treatment or surgical neutering will also be discussed including the pros and cons of each approach.

  • By the end of the session, delegates should have learnt how to:
  • 1.Advise a client on appropriate diet and preventative healthcare for their pet ferret
  • 2.Understand the risks and benefits of vaccinating a pet ferret
  • 3.Recognise the pros and cons of different approaches to contraception in the ferret
