Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. This lecture will focus on the pathophysiology of equine obesity, the associated negative health consequences and on how the epidemic should be tackled.

  • At the end of the lecture, delegates will be able to:
  • 1) Define obesity and recognise fatness in a horse
  • 2) Describe current knowledge of the epidemiology of equine obesity in the UK
  • 3) Explain the health risks of obesity in the horse
  • 4) Explain the epigenetic implications of diet in the horse
  • 5) Describe methods and tools available for teaching clients how to obtain weight loss in horses without compromising nutritional intake and welfare
