Assessment of the lame neonatal foal can be challenging and daunting, particularly when the desire to maximise athletic potential is considered. However, with a logical approach, most problems can be easily addressed to ensure the best outcome.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognise angular and flexural deformities in the neonatal foal, and instigate appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic measures to optimise athletic potential in the future.
- Diagnose and instigate treatment for synovial and osseous infections in neonatal foals, and understand the need for aggressive hospital-based treatment to maximise the prognosis.
- Diagnose and treat common digital extensor tendon rupture in the neonatal foal.
- Diagnose and treat palmar process fractures of the distal phalanx in neonatal foals.
