Notifiable diseases in horses: Recognition and management

Recent cases of equine notifiable diseases in the United Kingdom, as well as the increase of exotic vector borne infections in other species both globally and nationally, are a continued reminder of the risks posed to our equine population. Private veterinary surgeons are on the frontline of equine healthcare and play a pivotal role controlling disease through early detection and reporting of suspected cases. Quick detection of disease supports effective responses and control measures, helping to limit the impact of such diseases and maintain the overall health of the equine population and industry. Therefore, staying informed about the latest developments in disease presentation and epidemiology is essential.

Learning Outcomes

Present a stable side approach to notifiable diseases. 3. Discussion around government framework overseeing the control and prevention of notifiable diseases. Learn about the various government bodies involved. Briefly review the legal framework and regulations that mandate the reporting and control of these diseases. Understand the protocols for reporting. Understand current measures taken to monitor the risk to the UK from each relevant notifiable equine disease. Evaluate the factors influencing the risk of disease introduction and spread in the UK. Learn about the current surveillance measures in place, including monitoring programmes.
