In association with:
What's the role of risk-based preventive health care within a contextualised care framework?

How do we discuss the ever-increasing range and number of screening tests available for veterinary patients with clients? When there are constraints on performing these tests, how do we support clients to reach the decision that is most appropriate for them and their animals? How does contextualised care support animal welfare in this situation?

Learning Outcomes
  • Explore the skills required to communicate with clients about available screening tests in veterinary practice, using a shared decision-making approach
  • Discuss the risk-based recommendations for diagnostic testing in the veterinary surgery.
  • Consider the obligation to use genetic testing to reduce the risk of genetic diseases in populations
  • Understand the methodology and evidence behind UK human screening programmes and how they provide an insight into the pros and cons of screening in animals
