Are you missing them? Ureteral obstructions in cats – causes, consequences and diagnostics

21 Nov 2025
RVC Clinical Theatre 3
Internal Medicine

Ureteral obstructions in cats appear to be on the increase and can be life-threatening. Unilateral obstructions are easy to miss because cats may not even be azotaemic, but even if cats present with azotaemia, this can easily be misinterpreted as advanced CKD. In this lecture we will discuss which cats are at most risk for forming upper urinary tract stones and for developing ureteral obstruction, and how we can identify cats with ureteral obstruction in clinical practice.

  • To examine which cats in the UK are at most risk for forming upper urinary tract stones and subsequently ureteral obstructions
  • To understand the consequences of feline ureteral obstruction
  • To explore how we can make confidently make a diagnosis of ureteral obstruction in the clinic
