Cannabidiol (CBD) and related cannabinoids have shown promise in reducing seizure frequency in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy (IE), but significant uncertainty remains around dosing, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics due to variability in product formulations and limited high-quality data. This presentation will review an ongoing dose-escalation and pharmacokinetic study evaluating a novel cannabinoid drug in healthy client-owned dogs. The aims of the study are to define the maximum tolerated dose, assess adverse event profiles, and establish steady-state pharmacokinetic parameters to inform subsequent clinical trials that will focus on assessing the effectiveness of this drug for canine epilepsy. By rigorously characterizing dose and pharmacokinetics, this study addresses a major unmet need in veterinary neurology and lays the foundation for future trials comparing cannabinoids to established antiepileptic therapies.

  • Understand the current limitations in veterinary cannabinoid research, including product variability and lack of pharmacokinetic data.
  • Describe the importance of establishing steady-state pharmacokinetics to direct drug dosing.
  • Review the rationale and design of a dose-escalation study for determining tolerability in dogs.
  • Identify expected adverse events and safety considerations in cannabinoid administration.
  • Explore how the results of this ongoing study will be used to inform the design of future clinical trials in seizure management for dogs.
