Diagnosing and staging chronic kidney disease in cats - is there really anything new?

20 Nov 2025
RVC Clinical Theatre 1
Internal Medicine

Diagnosing early chronic kidney disease, before the development of azotaemia, represents a challenge in cats. The IRIS guidelines suggest that this diagnosis can be made in a number of ways including with imaging, by using SDMA concentrations and by tracking serum creatinine over time - but what is the evidence base for using these criteria to detect CKD and how can we improve our clinical practice to identify cats at risk for going on to become azotaemic?

  • To refresh understanding of the IRIS staging system and how to use it correctly
  • To discuss the methods available for making an early diagnosis of CKD in cats and explore the evidence base for these
  • To examine how we can use these methods to our full advantage in the clinic
