Don't just go through the motions: Should you reconsider your approach to routine deworming based on recent data?

20 Nov 2025
IDEXX Advanced Diagnostics Stream
Diagnostics , Parasitology

Routine deworming of pets is used as part of parasite control programs in cats and dogs across the UK. Concerns regarding over treatment, anthelmintic resistance and potential adverse environmental impacts however, have led to a risk based approach being recommended rather than blanket treatment. This session will look at what recent data tells us about the distribution of cat and doh helminths in the UK, the role of testing and the implementation of risk-based approaches to worm control in practice.

Learning objectives:

  • To understand which helminths are of major concern infecting UK cats and dogs
  • Their current distribution in the UK based on current data and the risk of exposure to both pets and humans
  • The role of routine risk based treatment in practice
  • The role of testing in helping to gauge risk, replace routine deworming and monitor treatment efficacy
  • How to incorporate testing and treatment into practice health plans
