Gait analysis - where are we?

21 Nov 2025
RVC Equine Theatre 2
Equine , Imaging , Sports Medicine

Objective gait analysis is rapidly transforming how equine veterinarians assess, monitor, and manage lameness and performance issues. In this session, we explore the current landscape of gait analysis technologies, from inertial sensors to AI-driven video tools, and their clinical applications in everyday practice. Using real-world cases, we’ll discuss how to interpret the data, avoid common pitfalls, and integrate these tools into clinical workflows. Whether you're sceptical or already using these systems, this lecture will help you separate the science from the hype and understand where equine gait analysis is heading next.

  • Describe the principles of equine gait analysis, including key kinematic and kinetic parameters relevant to clinical assessment.
  • Compare and contrast the main technologies used in objective gait analysis, including their strengths, limitations, and appropriate clinical contexts.
  • Interpret output data from gait analysis tools in the context of common lameness presentations, rehabilitation monitoring, and pre-purchase evaluations.
  • Recognise common sources of error or misinterpretation in objective gait data, and understand how to minimise these through correct usage and clinical correlation.
  • Evaluate how emerging technologies — including wearable sensors and AI-based tools — are likely to influence future equine lameness diagnostics and case management.
