Significant strides have been made in LGBT+ equality in the UK and globally over the past decade. However, prejudice persists in media and society, specifically targeting trans and non-binary individuals. Despite positive changes, recent legal rulings and a negative shift in the political narrative in 2025 have led many in the UK to feel unsafe being openly themselves in the workplace, including within the veterinary professions. Messages of support for Pride Month or LGBT+ History Month are still met with ignorance or malice. It is crucial for the community and allies to unite and determine the next steps towards fostering LGBT+ inclusivity within our profession.

This session will explore the concept of allyship, focusing on its importance in fostering an LGBTQ+ inclusive environment. Key areas of discussion include:

  • Understanding Challenges: Educating participants on the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, including microaggressions and discrimination, with illustrative examples.
  • Defining Allyship: Clearly outlining the role and responsibilities of an ally.
  • Practical Tools: Providing actionable tools and resources to create a more inclusive workplace.
  • Positive Impact: Highlighting how effective allyship leads to improved workplace experiences for both LGBTQ+ employees and their colleagues.
