Maintaining a social licence to operate - ethical issues in equestrian sports

21 Nov 2025
RVC Equine Theatre 2
Equine , Sports Medicine , Welfare

Social acceptability of equestrian sport is at an all time low. Following incidents in equestrian events at the Tokyo Olympics in several disciplines there was some very strong reactions from the media and spectators, with a section of the population asking for a ban of all equestrian competitions from the Olympic Games, considering them to be practices harmful to the well-being of horses.
It therefore seems essential especially for us as veterinarian to think about possible improvements, for the horses on the one hand, but also to ensure a serene future for these equestrian sports. This presentation will give some example of practices implemented following the Tokyo Olympics to improve horse welfare and give some example where welfare could be improved and ask how we as veterinarian can contribute in a positive manner.

  • Understand the main current challenges in equine welfare
  • Understand the importance of an evidence based approach in improving horse welfare
  • Being able to reflect on how we can improve horse welfare as equine practitioner
  • Understand how to influence public understanding of steps made in improving horse welfare
