Must do: Integrating quality of life assessment into the management of all chronic disease patients
In recent times, quite rightly, a heavy focus has been applied on the value of practising contextualised care. At times though, communications surrounding this topic, imply tension to exist between evidence based medicine approaches suggesting a gold standard to exist and such contextualised care approach. In this lecture, I will explain that this tension does not have to exist if our profession, finally, starts systematically integrating the missing link between these two concepts, into our exam room beaviour. This missing link constitutes of applying an evidence-based approach to documenting and monitoring quality of life of pets and their owners using psychometrically validated quality of life measurement tools. Examples of these tools will be provided to implement this approach and delegates will be introduced to the impartial website www.qol-pet.com which hosts a collection of these tools. After this lecture, no one should ever practice without it ever again.
