Ovine obstetrics: Improving outcomes by thinking beyond surgical technique!
If you’ve ever wondered: Which antibiotic is most appropriate? What can I do to improve survival rates? What about anaesthesia and analgesia? Does surgical gloving matter? Then this talk is for you!
Ovine caesarean sections and assisted vaginal deliveries (AVDs) are commonly performed by practitioners nationwide, and the relevant surgical approach is well documented.
What is less well researched and discussed, are the peri-procedural actions that could influence outcomes and success rates.
Informed by the results of the Charles & Stockton 2021-22 clinical audit into ovine obstetrical interventions across 21 practices - and other recent research papers into ovine obstetrical interventions - this talk will consider “everything but the surgery” (including common causes, peri-operative medications and post-procedure management).
It will also provide a summary of the evidence-base in order to help practitioners make the best evidence-based veterinary medicine decisions and, ideally, maximise their success rates for these procedures.
By the end of this session delegates should:
- Be able to advise their clients on responsible antimicrobial selection for ovine obstetrical cases
- Understand the latest evidence-based guidance to improve outcomes in ovine obstetrical cases
- Discuss and advise clients on the patient factors that affect ewe and lamb survival rates
- Understand the benefits of, and appropriate technique for, performing epidural anaesthesia in ovine obstetrical cases
