A gut, a kidney and a brain walk into a bar: Understanding the microbiome connection

This session will highlight some of the existing research and developing understanding regarding the connection between the gastrointestinal microbiome and systemic health, including connections to chronic kidney disease, emotional stress, and overall wellness in dogs and cats. The relative merits of pre-and probiotic supplementation will be touched on, and nutritional strategies for optimising the gastrointestinal microbiome and its effects on other organs will be covered.

  • Understand what we do and do not currently know about the canine and feline gastrointestinal microbiome.
  • Understand existing research regarding the outcomes of pre- and probiotic supplementation in dogs and cats.
  • Understand existing research and physiologic pathways regarding the connection between the GI microbiome and other organs and disease processes.
