Improving the euthanasia process for a dignified death

20 Nov 2025
RVC Nursing Theatre
Euthanasia , Nursing

Euthanasia is a profound and emotional aspect of veterinary care. This session presents a Quality Improvement (QI) project at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals aimed at improving the euthanasia experience for clients, staff, and animals. Key challenges—such as time pressures, communication, and environment—were addressed through targeted changes including room upgrades, scheduling adjustments, and new protocols. The result: a more compassionate, structured, and supportive process.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the ethical and emotional impact of euthanasia
  • Identify common barriers to a smooth euthanasia process
  • Recognize how QI methods support effective change
  • Describe strategies for enhancing the euthanasia experience
  • Apply these approaches to their own practice to improve care and staff wellbeing
