The 'art' of delivering good feedback - delivering from a clinical setting

21 Nov 2025
BVA Career Development
Leadership and Management , Practice Management

Giving and receiving feedback can be challenging, when done poorly it can negatively impact team morale, learning, and even patient safety.

This session explores the emotional impact of feedback on both sides, the long-term effects of poor feedback practices, and the common barriers that prevent constructive conversations. We'll discuss how to normalise everyday feedback - both appreciative and developmental - and offer practical tips to make it more effective, timely, and less daunting.

  • Recognise the emotional impact of both giving and receiving feedback in a clinical setting, and the potential consequences of poor or avoided feedback on team dynamics and patient safety.
  • Reflect on common barriers to delivering effective feedback, including lack of time, confidence, or role modelling, and explore strategies to overcome them.
  • Apply practical techniques to deliver constructive and appreciative feedback with clarity and confidence, using both structured and informal approaches throughout the clinical day.
