Top tips: My top tips for managing the emergency seizure patient

21 Nov 2025
RVC Clinical Theatre 2
Neurology

The emergency seizure patient requires prompt stabilisation followed by ongoing careful monitoring and management. In this session we will discuss common causes for seizures and will work through a logical plan for stabilising and managing the seizuring dog. We will then consider how that plan can be optimised for cats. We will review current treatment recommendations as well as recent relevant literature, applying the most up to date information to optimise our clinical practice.

  • Build confidence in distinguishing a seizure from other emergent neurological presentations
  • Be able to discuss important causes of seizures in dogs and cats
  • Formulate a practical diagnostic and treatment strategy for the emergency seizuring dog or cat
