Vet Skills Where They Matter Most: On the Frontline with Roaming Dogs
Three out of four dogs worldwide live as roaming or community animals with little or no access to veterinary care. In this session, Dr Janey Lowes, founder of WECare Worldwide, shares her journey from UK GP vet to the frontlines of Sri Lanka, where complex, once-in-a-career cases are daily occurrences. From maggot wounds to cobra bites, Janey will show how core veterinary skills can be applied in resource-limited settings to make a profound difference to animal welfare and public health. This talk will challenge perceptions, inspire new perspectives on global veterinary medicine, and demonstrate how every vet has the power to impact the “forgotten 75%.”
By the end of this session, delegates will be able to:
- Recognise the scale and challenges of the global roaming dog population.
- Apply core veterinary skills to high-impact cases in resource-limited settings.
- Reflect on how vets can use their expertise to make a difference beyond traditional practice.
