Abdominal pain. Arrghh - how do I know, how do I assess and what can I do

20 Nov 2026
Gallery Suite 11-12
Anaesthesia

This session will include a brief understanding of the mechanisms of visceral pain, the clinical signs, some common causes and an overview of a workup in our small animal patients. How can we recognise and assess abdominal pain? Are there any assessment tools available for us? Are we confirming our suspected pain condition by ruling out other conditions affecting behaviour and / or ruling out pain elsewhere? Are we using trial and error? Are we anthropomorphising? What is currently out there in the literature to guide our clinical decisions? This session will investigate these questions and discuss ways to navigate through them.
