Acid, base and everything in between: Getting to grips with blood gases
Acid–base disturbances are common in veterinary patients, yet interpretation of blood gas data can be confusing and inconsistently applied in clinical practice. This session provides a practical, clinically oriented approach to acid–base analysis, focusing on how to interpret and apply blood gas results in real time. Participants will review core physiologic principles. Both traditional (Henderson–Hasselbalch) and Stewart (strong ion) approaches will be simplified and discussed to outline where their clinical value lies. Case examples will emphasize how this matters to your patients.
By the end of this program, participants will be able to:
- Describe the fundamental physiology of acid–base balance
- Apply a stepwise, simple and practical approach to blood gas interpretation
- Discuss how you can use the information in a blood gas to guide your therapy and next diagnostic steps
