Brucella canis: An emerging threat in UK dogs – what every vet needs to know

This lecture will provide a practical update on Brucella canis, an emerging infectious disease of increasing concern in UK veterinary practice. Covering epidemiology, routes of transmission, clinical presentations and diagnostic approaches, the session will highlight the challenges associated with identifying and managing infected dogs. Particular emphasis will be placed on the zoonotic risk, implications for veterinary teams, and the latest UK guidance on testing, biosecurity, and case management.

  • 1. Describe the epidemiology and routes of transmission of Brucella canis, including factors contributing to its emergence within the UK dog population.
  • 2. Recognise the clinical manifestations of B. canis infection in dogs and identify situations in which testing should be considered.
  • 3. Select and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests for B. canis, understanding the limitations and challenges associated with diagnosis
