Cervical radiculopathy in horses - Clinical features, diagnosis and treatment options

20 Nov 2026
RVC Equine Theatre 2

Cervical radiculopathy is an increasingly recognised cause of neck pain, forelimb lameness and poor performance in horses, but diagnosis can be challenging. This session will review the clinical presentation and diagnostic approach to suspected cervical nerve root compression, including the role of advanced imaging and targeted diagnostic procedures. Current treatment options will also be discussed, from medical management and image-guided nerve root medication through to emerging surgical techniques. Attendees will gain a practical framework for recognising, investigating and managing these often complex cases.

  • - Recognise the common clinical presentations associated with cervical radiculopathy in horses.
  • - Apply a structured diagnostic approach to suspected cervical nerve root compression, including appropriate use of imaging and targeted diagnostic procedures.
  • - Understand the current medical and image-guided treatment options available.
  • - Appreciate the role, indications and limitations of emerging surgical techniques for cervical nerve root decompression.
