Compliance and caregiver burden: The impacts of therapy choice

20 Nov 2026
Zoetis Learning Academy

Chronic conditions in companion animals present unique challenges - not only for clinicians, but also for pet owners tasked with ongoing care. We will delve into the pivotal roles of treatment compliance and caregiver burden in chronic disease management. Through evidence-based insights and real-world strategies, participants will learn how to optimise patient outcomes while supporting pet families through the complexities of chronic disease.

  • Define compliance/adherence in a veterinary context and explain why it is important for patient outcomes, client experience, and practice performance.
  • Evaluate the extent to which poor compliance is an issue in veterinary practice, using common examples and indicators.
  • Identify and categorize key barriers to compliance (e.g., client-, patient-, therapy-, and system/practice-related factors).
  • Describe caregiver burden and explain how it influences treatment decisions, adherence, and animal welfare.
  • Apply practical strategies to overcome barriers to compliance and reduce caregiver burden through clear communication, simplified regimens, and supportive follow-up
