Defence Turns into Destruction: Blood Cells in the Line of Fire in IMHA and IMTP

20 Nov 2026
RVC Nursing Theatre
Internal Medicine , Nursing

This session will review the challenging and often life threatening immune mediated haematological disorders seen in canine patients, specifically immune mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA) and immune mediated thrombocytopenia (IMTP).

A review of the pathophysiology of each condition will provide a baseline of knowledge to further understand how and why a patient’s immune system might erroneously attack their red blood cells and/or platelets, resulting in the extensive destruction often observed in these cases. The session will also highlight various risk factors, identify common clinical signs and discuss diagnostic tools typically performed in these patients, noting the diverse and dynamic role of the RVN.

From triage to inpatient care (including transfusion medicine, diagnostics, medical management right up until patient discharge and client education); this lecture, supported by the most recent literature available, will look to inspire RVNs to confidently play a fundamental role in the management of patients with these immune mediated conditions.

  • 1)Understand the pathophysiology of immune mediated haemolytic anaemia and immune mediated thrombocytopenia in canine patients.
  • 2)Be able to recognise risk factors, common clinical signs and the diagnostic techniques, including blood film examination, typically performed in these patients.
  • 3)Understand the treatment options and nursing care required for both emergency and long-term patients with IMHA and IMTP.
  • 4)Be able to recognise the nursing considerations and the dynamic role of the RVN when managing these patients in the clinic.
