Problem solving the ‘found dead' pig for improved future herd health

20 Nov 2026
RVC Farm Theatre
Farm , Clinical Pathology , Pig

In this talk, we will describe how vets can problem solve cases in which pigs are ‘found dead’ to protect the rest of the herd. This will involve evaluating suspicion of notifiable disease, considering common diagnoses and knowing where to go for help. The talk will particularly focus on common differentials for this clinical presentation amongst pigs kept on small-scale holdings.

  • 1.Be able to evaluate when to report cases of pigs ‘found dead’ as suspect notifiable disease.
  • 2.Be able to carry out basic diagnostic investigations for pigs found dead by understanding how to investigate the most common differential diagnoses.
  • 3.Know where to go for help when investigating cases of pigs ‘found dead’ and how APHA’s diagnostic service can provide advice, support and diagnostic testing.
