Things that blow up in the night: Tackling the acute surgical abdomen
What do you do when the emergency patient in front of you has a GDV, septic peritonitis, or bile peritonitis and referral isn't an option? This practical session will guide you through the recognition, stabilisation, and surgical management of the acute abdomen. We will review the management of GDV, including gastropexy and decision-making in cases complicated by gastric necrosis. We will discuss how to perform a complete exploratory laparotomy in patients with septic or bile peritonitis of unknown origin, and cover essential techniques for managing common intraoperative findings, including duodenal ulcer repair and cholecystectomy.
