In purr-suit of health: Does early detection and intervention help in feline CKD?
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common and progressive disease in cats. It may often only be diagnosed at a relatively late stage, as cats in early stages show subtle insidious onset clinical signs. This lecture explores whether earlier detection and intervention can improve outcomes for cats with CKD. Evidence supports routine blood screening of cats ≥7 years with more frequent monitoring in older cats. Studies show subclinical CKD is present 15% of apparently healthy senior cats, and many will develop azotaemic CKD within one to two years despite initially normal results. The session will review current approaches to early diagnosis, including longitudinal evaluation of biomarkers and also the evidence for whether therapeutic intervention is beneficial for cats with early-stage CKD.
