Liver disease: To biopsy or not to biopsy and interpreting the histopathology
Abnormal liver enzymes are a common finding in equine practice in the UK but deciding whether a liver biopsy is truly warranted can be challenging. This session will provide a practical, evidence-based framework for determining when biopsy is likely to influence diagnosis, prognosis, and case management, and when it may add little clinical value. It will review biopsy techniques, sample collection, and factors that maximise diagnostic yield before demystifying the interpretation of common histopathological findings and their clinical significance. Emphasis will be placed on integrating histopathology with clinical signs, clinicopathological data, and imaging findings to reach meaningful clinical conclusions. Attendees will leave with greater confidence in deciding when to biopsy, performing a biopsy and interpreting histopathology reports to make informed, evidence-based decisions for horses with liver disease.
