Making Every Drop Count: Practical Fluid Therapy for Horses
This session will provide a practical, evidence-based overview of fluid therapy in the adult horse, refreshing the physiological principles underpinning fluid therapy and exploring the pathophysiological changes that alter fluid balance in disease. The session will also discuss the practical challenges of fluid administration in large animals, emphasising the importance of selecting the appropriate fluid type and route of administration.
Drawing on recent evidence and current recommendations, the session will cover important topics including goal-directed fluid therapy, the role of the endothelial glycocalyx, and the development of individualised fluid therapy plans for more complex cases.
- Understand the risks and benefits associated with fluid therapy in the horse
- Refresh existing physiology and update knowledge with more recent recommendations.
