Mastering a safe and effective field anaesthetic

19 Nov 2026
RVC Equine Theatre 1
Anaesthesia

This session will provide a practical discussion of field anaesthesia in horses, with an emphasis on safety and decision-making. It will cover patient assessment and case selection, preparation of the field environment, anaesthesia protocols and essential monitoring techniques. The lecture will also address complications, risk mitigation strategies and recovery management, using case-based examples to illustrate key principles.
Field anaesthesia in equine practice carries inherent risks due to the variable and often unpredictable environments in which procedures are undertaken. Confidence in this skill is critical for those aiming to deliver effective care while minimising harm to both patient and personnel. A structured, evidence-based approach can significantly improve outcomes and confidence in the field.
Attendees will gain confidence planning and delivering field anaesthesia safely, a deeper understanding of pharmacological choices and their practical implications, and strategies for managing complications. Attendees will leave better equipped to apply these techniques in everyday practice, improving both clinical outcomes and professional confidence.

  • - Make confident, informed decisions on case selection for field anaesthesia
  • - Use and adapt balanced anaesthetic protocols to optimise personnel and patient safety
  • - Optimise anaesthetic monitoring in the field to guide decision-making
  • - Anticipate and manage anaesthetic complications outside the controlled environment of a hospital
