Mycobacterial infections in dogs and cats: Clinical challenges and zoonotic risks
20 Nov 2026
RVC Clinical Theatre 3
This lecture will provide an up-to-date overview of mycobacterial infections in dogs and cats, with a focus on the diagnostic, therapeutic, and public health challenges these cases present. Attendees will learn about the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and clinical manifestations of infections caused by members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and non-tuberculous mycobacteria. The session will explore practical approaches to diagnosis and case management, discuss prognostic factors and treatment outcomes, and review the zoonotic implications of mycobacterial disease.
- 1. Describe the epidemiology, transmission routes, and pathogenesis of mycobacterial infections in dogs and cats.
- 2. Recognise the diverse clinical presentations of mycobacterial disease and formulate appropriate diagnostic plans.
- 3. Evaluate treatment options, prognostic factors, and challenges associated with managing affected patients.
- 4. Assess the zoonotic risks associated with mycobacterial infections and implement appropriate infection control and client communication strategies.
