This session takes a deep dive into the evidence behind best-practice peripheral IV catheter placement and maintenance in canine and feline patients. From site selection and preparation to catheter choice, insertion technique, and ongoing maintenance, we'll walk through evidence-informed best practice that keeps catheters patent and comfortable, and veins usable for the duration of catheter requirement. Delegates will leave with a clear framework for standardising peripheral IV catheter care within their practice, grounded in current veterinary and translational human critical care literature.
- 1. Select the right catheter for the right patient — applying a structured assessment of site, gauge, and material based on clinical need, vascular status, and anticipated duration of therapy.
- 2. Execute placement and maintenance to an evidence-based standard — from skin prep and aseptic insertion through to dressing, flushing, and management to actively reduce the risk of a complication.
- 3. Spot complications early and act — recognising the clinical signs of catheter failure and knowing exactly when and how to intervene to protect the vein, preserve therapy, and safeguard patient welfare.
