Pricing v Proformas: Why understanding the difference is crucial to a practice’s success

20 Nov 2026
Business Theatre
Professional Skills , Practice Management

This talk is relevant to anyone working in veterinary practice who discusses the financial side of veterinary transactions. (In short; everyone!) The terms price, cost, ‘estimate’, charges, bills, and invoices are often used interchangeably in practice. Beyond understanding the semantic differences between these terms, it is crucial to recognise the commercial impact of using them tactically within veterinary businesses - especially in a post-CMA era. This talk will highlight these differences and suggest how evolving terminology can assist those who discuss the financial aspects of veterinary transactions with clients to reduce ambiguity, uncertainty and increase compliance with a clinician’s recommendations.

  • What is the difference between the terms price, cost, ‘estimate’, charges, bills, and invoices. Understand how using and applying these terms tactically impacts the commercial success of veterinary businesses.
