Restoring balance to the canine gut microbiome

19 Nov 2026
Gallery Suite 13

The canine gut microbiome is increasingly recognised as an important contributor to digestive, immune and wider health, but translating microbiome data into meaningful nutritional interventions remains a challenge. Drawing on BIOME9’s microbiome testing programme of more than 3,500 dogs and research collaborations across academia and industry, this lecture will explore how microbiome testing can identify dysbiosis and individual differences in the canine gut microbiome. It will examine how factors such as diet, antibiotics, health, and lifestyle can influence microbial communities, and how these insights can inform more targeted approaches to diet and supplementation. Using a Restore → Repopulate → Optimise framework, the session will show how microbiome data can translate into practical interventions and monitoring strategies, moving beyond guesswork and one-size-fits-all recommendations.

  • Understand the role of the canine gut microbiome in digestive, immune and wider health.
  • Recognise key features of dysbiosis and factors that can influence the canine gut microbiome.
  • Understand how microbiome testing can support more individualised nutritional and supplementation strategies.
  • Apply a Restore → Repopulate → Optimise framework to microbiome-informed interventions and ongoing monitoring.
