“Do well by doing good” is a phrase that resonates deeply in veterinary medicine. It reflects a profession built on care, compassion, and a genuine desire to improve the lives of animals. It suggests that clinical excellence and commercial success naturally go hand in hand.
But in practice, the reality is more complex. Left unexamined, this idea becomes a comforting half-truth. Because sometimes you can do good work and still not build a sustainable business. And sometimes businesses can do well financially without meaningfully improving outcomes for patients, clients, or teams.
