From consult to resolution: How RVNs transform otitis outcomes

19 Nov 2026
Gallery Suite 13

This session will explore the veterinary nurse’s role in supporting the diagnosis and management of otitis, from the initial consultation through to ongoing patient care. Delegates will gain a clear understanding of the legal and professional responsibilities of the veterinary nurse, including when veterinary surgeon involvement is required. Practical guidance will cover fear-free handling and restraint techniques to enable safe, low-stress patient assessment, alongside a systematic approach to ear examination and otoscopy. Participants will learn how to recognise normal and abnormal ear anatomy, identify common clinical findings associated with otitis, and collect, prepare and interpret ear cytology samples. The session will also outline a structured nurse-led otitis consultation pathway, covering patient assessment, diagnostics, client communication and effective collaboration with the veterinary surgeon to help optimise patient outcomes and client compliance.

  • Describe the role of the veterinary nurse in otitis consultations, including the legal and professional responsibilities that can be undertaken by a veterinary nurse and the situations that require veterinary surgeon involvement.
  • Demonstrate fear-free handling and restraint techniques to facilitate safe, low-stress examination of patients presenting with ear disease.
  • Perform a systematic ear examination, including otoscopy, and differentiate between normal and abnormal ear anatomy and common clinical findings associated with otitis.
  • Collect and prepare ear cytology samples, interpret common cytological findings, and outline a structured nurse-led otitis consultation pathway, including appropriate assessments, diagnostics, client communication, and collaboration with the veterinary surgeon before and after veterinary review.
