Emerging zoonotic diseases in European companion animals: evaluation of the diagnostic and epidemiological gaps. Can local veterinary practices be part of the solution?
This interactive session will allow the audience and the speakers to challenge their perception of the role played by local vet clinics in a public health landscape. By exploring the evolving burden of zoonotic diseases and the impact of climate change and shifting ecosystems on companion animals’ health, the participants will gain understanding and may also share their experiences on what veterinarians are currently seeing or missing in their daily practices. The session will present a few scenarios in the context of One Health framing, connecting companion animal diagnostics to human health and discuss how a rapid in-clinic diagnostics can shift the paradigm from reactive treatment to proactive surveillance and disease management. This will highlight the potential contribution of the nearby vet practice to real-time, local and European-wide disease monitoring.
- Recognise key zoonotic infection risks at the pet–owner interface
- Understand how local veterinary practices can contribute to earlier disease awareness
- How a rapid diagnosis can prevent disease spreading and better support disease management
