Raw feeding: Five things every veterinary nurse should know

19 Nov 2026
Exhibitor Showcase 2

Raw feeding remains one of the most debated topics in companion animal nutrition, yet the number of owners choosing to feed raw diets continues to grow. This practical session is designed specifically for veterinary nurses and focuses on supporting informed, evidence-based conversations with clients. We'll explore why owners choose to feed raw, how to identify nutritionally complete and balanced diets, key considerations for different life stages, and the importance of food safety and hygiene. The session will also discuss the veterinary nurse's role in providing non-judgemental guidance that prioritises patient welfare, client trust and safe feeding practices. Delegates will leave with practical knowledge and confidence to support owners who choose to feed raw, while recognising that nutritional needs are unique and one feeding method doesn’t fit for all pets.

  • Recognise when raw feeding may or may not be appropriate for an individual patient and understand the importance of an individualised approach to nutrition.
  • Identify the characteristics of a nutritionally complete and balanced raw diet, including the differences between complete and complementary feeding.
  • Discuss the risks associated with poorly formulated diets and how to recognise these vs. well formulated raw diets.
  • Discuss the nutritional considerations for raw feeding at different life stages and explain the importance of appropriate food safety and hygiene practices.
  • Apply practical communication strategies to support open, evidence-based conversations with owners who choose to feed raw diets.
