Tapeworms are common parasites of cats and dogs but aside from the human revulsion that they can generate, should we care? The potential for offal and meat condemnation from Taenia cysts as well as the profound zoonotic risk that Echinococcus spp present across Europe and in the UK means that these parasites need to be considered when assessing parasite risk for our pets and those in contact with them. While risk based strategic treatment remains an important part of tapeworm control, diagnostics also play an important role in surveillance and monitoring for resistance.
