Canine epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological disorders in dogs and presents significant challenges across the continuum of emergency care and long-term management. This talk highlights three essential clinical priorities: triage, treat, and track.
- Triage dogs presenting with seizure activity by distinguishing isolated events from cluster seizures and status epilepticus, and implementing appropriate emergency stabilisation protocols.
- Formulate an evidence-based treatment plan for both acute seizure control and long-term management of canine epilepsy, selecting and adjusting antiseizure medications based on signalment, seizure type, and response.
- Implement a structured monitoring strategy to track seizure frequency, treatment efficacy, and adverse effects, using clinical reassessment and therapeutic drug monitoring to optimise long-term outcomes.
