Acute kidney injury (AKI) can be either community or hospital acquired. Recognising AKI in either situation is key to early and optimised management. Careful monitoring particularly to balance fluid therapy with urine output and provide supportive care can be critical to outcome. However, the management of the AKI patient doesn’t stop at the point of discharge. Many key questions arise in relation to optimising monitoring and treatment in the post-AKI period. This lecture will answer what three things to consider for successful management of the AKI patient in the hospital and at home
- -Recognise life threatening consequences associated with AKI
- -Understand methods for monitoring of urine output in patients AKI
- -Formulate a fluid plan for a patient with AKI
- -Recognise the importance of monitoring post-discharge
- -Understand the transitions between AKI to AKD to CKD
- -Consider long-term adjustments for the post-AKI patient
