Recurrence, flares and persistence of ear disease generates frustration for all parties, and – importantly – may cause irreversible changes of the aural structures and thus become self-perpetuating and progressive. This lecture considers reasons for poor response to treatment and proposes structured approaches, organised around three principles — clean, sample, control — for the main presentations of chronic otitis: the red itchy ear, the manky black ear, the obviously stenotic ear, and the purulent ear.
- On completion, participants should be able to:
- • Recognise when a change of approach is needed in managing chronic or recurrent otitis
- • Identify factors that prevent resolution of otitis
- • Develop strategies to address those factors using a Clean – Sample – Control framework
