What three things? Managing toxicities in general practice – prevent, bind, remove

19 Nov 2026
RVC Clinical Theatre 3
ECC
Management of small animal toxicities in general practice follows three key principles: prevent, bind, and remove. First, prevent further toxin exposure and stabilise the patient. Next, bind toxins. This can be achieved in the gastrointestinal tract, through the use of activated charcoal or in the bloodstream using intralipid. Finally, remove the toxin through methods such as inducing emesis, gastric lavage, specific antidotes and advanced extracorporeal therapies. This systematic approach helps reduce toxin absorption, enhance elimination, and improve patient outcomes.
