When stable isn't stable: Assessment and monitoring of medical inpatients

20 Nov 2026
Gallery Suite 15-16
Internal Medicine , Nursing

In this session we will explore how deterioration in medical inpatients often begins subtly and how registered veterinary nurses are best placed to notice something "is not quite right", ensuring rapid intervention can be implemented. Medical patients do not always arrest dramatically, more commonly they change gradually, in ways that do not always show up immediately as changes in vital parameters.

This session will focus on what changes first, why those changes matter and how our observations and monitoring can inform our nursing care. We will use case-based examples during the session and examine effective methods to enable us to escalate our concerns to the wider team.

  • By the end of this session, delegates will be able to:
  • Identify early indicators of clinical deterioration in medical inpatients.
  • Recognise clinically significant trends beyond routine vital parameters.
  • Implement appropriate nurse-led interventions.
  • Escalate concerns effectively and confidently.
