IVC Evidensia announces two-day London Vet Show lecture schedule for 2023
The IVC 2023 London Vet Show lecture theatre line-up delves deep into some of the most topical issues in the profession today.
Whilst the IVC Evidensia Referrals lectures have been a popular main stay at London Vet Show for many years, this year IVC will tackle important subjects during the first day’s talks such as “Vets v nurses: Are we blurring the lines? “ with Daniella Dos Santos and Liz Coz, and “The criminal underworld and animal welfare” which is one of two lectures from David Martin.
The second day will be dedicated to referrals, covering topics such as the emergency approach to dyspnoea, differentiating cardiac and pulmonary diseases, as well as different aspects of diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disease.
Speakers this year include Daniella Dos Santos, Laura Playforth, Sayaka Okushima, Sarah Heath, David Martin and Richard Sinclair on the first day, and David Owen, Julia Sargent, Jacques Ferreira and Harry Swales on day two.
Shining a light on key areas across the profession
IVC continues its focus on flexible working within the day one programme, along with a diverse range of other areas that are integral to IVC Evidensia culture. A big topic is psychological safety and the adoption of a safety-critical culture in veterinary practice with Laura Playforth, IVC Group QI Director. She looks to another safety-critical industry, mountaineering, to further our understanding of what a learning and improvement culture can look like following the significant event review done following the Mount Everest tragedy in 1996.
She will be elaborating on how this change in culture can lead to the creation of a collaborative work environment where everyone feels supported in their aim to ultimately improve themselves and their team.
Sustainability in the veterinary industry will also be a key focus. Sayaka Okushima, who is a European Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, from Pride Veterinary Referrals, and Sarah Heath, Director of Sustainability and the lead for our Positive Pawprint strategy, will be discussing the use of anaesthetic gases during procedures. These gases are a significant contributor of carbon emissions and they will share ways to use lower flow anaesthesia in first opinion practice with the systems already in place.
Sharing insights from referral colleagues
The second day will showcase a number of referrals clinicians who will discuss various areas of specialty, from handling emergency situations to mastering diagnostic testing equipment in first opinion practice.
David Owen, a Referral ECC Clinician at Vets Now in Manchester, will be talking about talking about emergency dyspnoea cases and how veterinary colleagues can cope with challenging situations efficiently, by removing stress from the equation and focusing on the needs of the patient.
Frances Bird, a European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery at Pride Veterinary Referrals, will be closing out the day with a discussion on treating respiratory disease from a surgeon’s perspective, taking into account any complications that can arise while managing the patient post-operatively.
