Get to Know: Toby Trimble - Transforming Veterinary Anaesthesia and the Future of Learning

Toby Trimble, RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, Founder & CEO of the Trimble Group, a company reimagining how veterinary professionals learn. Known for his dynamic teaching style and passion for innovation, Toby has built a career that bridges science, creativity, and communication.

We caught up with him to discuss his journey into veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia, the inspiration behind his company, and what attendees can look forward to during his London Vet Show session, “Sedation in focus: Real cases, new thinking, better outcomes.”

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what inspired you to start a career in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia?

A: I became a vet because I wanted to understand how animals worked, and anaesthesia is the most extreme example of that in our field – it’s physiology and pharmacology applied in real time. Managing challenging patients with the right techniques is complex but incredibly rewarding.

Q: What motivated you to start your own company, Trimble Group? And how do you focus on reinventing education for animal health?

A: I’m dyslexic, and traditional education was always a challenge for me. I’ve seen first-hand the power of learning when it’s done differently. At Trimble Group, we combine storytelling, creative media, and neuroscience to make CPD engaging, memorable, and impactful. It doesn’t just tick boxes, it changes practice and improves animal welfare.

Q: Without giving too much away, can you tell us about your session on “Sedation in focus: Real cases, new thinking, better outcomes” and what you hope people will take away from it?

A: The session is built around real cases to bring sedation to life, with a focus on recent advances in the tools we have available and practical decision-making for dogs in practice. It’s designed to be visual, interactive, and fun while giving vets and veterinary nurses strategies they can take straight back to their clinics.

Q: What are the biggest challenges you face in veterinary anaesthesia?

A: The challenge is keeping anaesthesia practical, helping vets and nurses focus on core skills that they can apply with confidence every day. It’s easy to get lost in high-level techniques, but real impact comes from making safe, consistent anaesthesia accessible across all types of practice.
