As we welcome back the initiative for its second iteration, we are delighted to have had the chance to interview Martin Riley, the Managing Director of National Veterinary Services.
Q: Can you share with us the highlights of your career journey leading up to your role as a Managing Director of National Veterinary Services?
A: Before joining National Veterinary Services as the Managing Director in 2005, I had gained over 18 years’ experience in the animal health sector. Throughout my career, I have witnessed significant changes in the industry, and to the businesses that I have been involved in. At NVS, we recently opened our state-of-the-art warehouse and distribution centre, Spitfire House, in Stoke-on-Trent, along with several other innovative projects within the NVS Group. These include expanding digital pathology services at NationWide Laboratories and upgrading our VetIT practice management system to enhance our customer’s experience.
Q: We’re very excited for the upcoming collaboration of BVA Live 2024 and NVS Group on the New Practice Academy. What motivated NVS to help launch this initiative?
A: The collaboration between BVA Live 2024 and NVS Group on the New Practice Academy stemmed from recognising the increasing number of new veterinary practices opening in recent years. Understanding the challenges that come with establishing a new practice - from financing and finding suitable premises to staffing and marketing - we saw an opportunity to support those on this journey. By partnering with BVA Live and London Vet Show, we aim to bring together industry experts and experienced practitioners to provide valuable insights to individuals contemplating opening a new practice.
Q: What resources and opportunities does the New Practice Academy provide to its attendees?
A: The New Practice Academy provides attendees with access to a wealth of resources and opportunities. It includes panel discussions featuring new practice owners sharing their experiences, expert advice on financing options, and an exhibition trail showcasing key exhibitors relevant to those venturing into practice ownership.
Q: How can attendees directly benefit from participating in the New Practice Academy?
A: By participating in the New Practice Academy, attendees can benefit from the shared experiences of others who have successfully navigated the journey of opening a new practice. They also have the opportunity to tap into industry expertise and connect with key veterinary suppliers like NVS Group.
Q: How does the New Practice Academy (NPA) support practices participating in the initiative throughout the year?
A: Beyond the events, NPA offers ongoing support to participating practices. This includes guides like "The Modern Vets Guide to Opening a New Practice", we are developing extended content beyond LVS and BVA live, including upcoming sessions at NVS's distribution centre, and opportunities to engage with experts in their field throughout the year.
Q: Undeniably, there are numerous benefits associated with participating in the New Practice Academy. For individuals keen on joining the NPA, what are your tips for getting involved in the programme?
A: Individuals keen on joining the New Practice Academy can sign up through the LVS website's NPA page.
