Nine Out Of Ten Pet Owners Would Prefer Their Pets to Spend Their Final Moments at Home

A new study has revealed that the
majority of UK pet owners - a striking 94 percent - would prefer their pet to
spend its final moments at home rather than in a veterinary clinic. However,
two thirds of pet owners aren’t aware that that at-home euthanasia is even an
option.
Commissioned by Cloud 9 Vets, a leading UK provider of at-home pet euthanasia, the research surveyed 400 pet owners and uncovered a strong emotional desire for pets to pass away in the comfort of their home, surrounded by familiar people and surroundings.
Lisbet Stuer-Lauridson, Cloud 9 Vets Director, said:
‘Most of us would choose to spend our final moments at home, surrounded by loved ones in a familiar and secure environment, so it makes sense that pet owners want the same for their animals.
‘This research clearly indicates the need for more awareness of the options available for end-of-life care for pets.’
The findings also highlight that more than eight out of ten owners (81 percent) would choose a home visit from a vet when the time comes, rather than making a potentially stressful final trip to the clinic.
Ensuring a peaceful and dignified end of life for their pet, was also a key priority for owners, with almost every respondent saying it mattered deeply to them. However, despite this overwhelming preference, current awareness is low. Sixty-seven percent of owners admitted they had no idea that a professional at-home euthanasia service was available in the UK.
The emotional burden of knowing when to say goodbye is also significant. Eighty-seven percent said they find it difficult to make that decision, and many would appreciate knowing there is someone to talk to about at-home options, to make the process less overwhelming.
The research also found increasing interest in personalised aftercare, with many owners willing to arrange in an individual cremation and in-home support which reflect their pet’s importance in their lives.
With these new insights, Cloud 9 Vets aims to contribute to a wider conversation about end-of-life care for pets: to highlight the importance of awareness, access, and support for owners facing difficult, and often heart-breaking, decisions.
